Jaspice: A Small Business Fighting Through Rumors and Resilience

For nearly nine years, Jaspice, located at 67 Main Street, Netcong, New Jersey, has been serving the community with authentic Caribbean flavors and a commitment to quality. But behind the food and friendly service is a story of perseverance in the face of persistent rumors and community challenges.

Since opening its doors, Jaspice has dealt with ongoing word-of-mouth claims meant to discourage customers from visiting. Among the most damaging rumors were accusations of mold in the building. On one occasion, the owner recalls a passerby running past the restaurant and loudly shouting “mold,” reinforcing negative perceptions without context or facts.

The truth, according to the owner, is more nuanced. A mold issue was once discovered in a rear ceiling area of the building. Instead of ignoring it, the problem was addressed immediately and professionally, costing approximately $1,900 to repair. Since then, the restaurant has maintained strict cleanliness standards and continues to keep the space well-maintained.

Despite these efforts, the rumors have lingered. The owner says the issue goes deeper than misinformation, pointing to a lack of support from certain members of the immediate community. “We never did anything to anyone,” the owner explains. “We focus on our food, our customers, and doing things the right way, yet the negativity keeps coming.”

Rather than give up, Jaspice is moving forward. The restaurant has begun redesigning and refreshing the interior, aiming to create a more inviting atmosphere and attract new customers. The goal is simple: improve, grow, and let the food and the facts speak for themselves.

Jaspice’s story reflects a broader struggle many small, independent businesses face—especially those trying to succeed without backing or favoritism. Through resilience, reinvestment, and determination, Jaspice continues to stand its ground, focused on building a stronger future despite the obstacles.
